Septology

I started this book, by Jon Fosse, because he won the Nobel prize for Literature, and I was curious after reading the reviews. It’s stream of consciousness, all in one long, long sentence. Except where there is dialog, then it is (helpfully) broken up. At first it was difficult to continue, as nothing was happening, but I decided to use it for bedtime reading. That was successful! In fact, the main character, practically the only character, is so very tired, all he thinks about is how tired he is, so after 15 minutes or so I’d put it aside and sleep. So thankful that I could sleep, unlike the narrator who was driving on a snowy highway! But after a while, I got hooked. I began to love this man, to look forward to his voice, his daily routines. To read more and more each evening, and to be really sorry when the book ended. A great deal about art, about religion, about friendship. My advice is to persevere.
